After reading How to Overcome Perfectionism by Celestine Chua I thought a lot about myself. I am a perfectionist and like for everything to go just right and when it doesn't (which it rarely does) I get anxious. Based on the article I think I am between neurotic perfectionism and healthy perfectionism. While my perfectionism does positively motivate me it also makes my achievements define me. If I get a bad grade on a test then I feel as though I am not smart enough and need to change my major, which plays into my all-or-nothing mindset. This article helped me to see some of the ways that my drive to always be perfect can be hurtful to myself and my relationships with others. I learned that I need to be better about loving myself, others, and my flaws.
I often struggle with talking about failure, especially to my college roommates. I live with three other girls who always have it together, have 4.0s, and never seem to fail. I often find myself comparing my life to theirs. After reading Talking About Failure Is Crucial for Growth. Here's How to Do It Right by The New York Times I learned talking about failure prevents you from making the same mistakes, creates closer relationships with others, and makes you seem more approachable. I am going to make it a point to try to be more open and honest about failure.
