Advice to Writers: Story Laboratory

I choose to look at Jon Winokur's Advice to Writers site. One of the pieces of advice that stood out to me was written by Leslie Connor. She was asked the question, "What's your advice to new writers?" While I consider myself a new writer, not because I have never written anything before, but this is the first time that I have written consistently. I was interested to see Leslie's response to this question. Leslie's said, "shorten your sentences and cut your adverbs! Practice dedicated daydreaming. Seek to tell the truth about the world and the characters that have arrived into your heart for each story." As a writer I personally struggle with writing really long sentences. I think this habit stems from high school where it was instilled in me by my english teacher to write longer and complex sentences. I am quickly learning that this is no always the best and most effective way of writing.

  1. Hi Olivia,

I think I have struggled with the same problem when writing. I felt that when writing papers in high school, writing more was most often better than writing less. This resulted in me trying to add a lot of unnecessary details. Because of this class, I have recently started trying to write more short and to the point stories in an attempt to become more concise with my words.
