Topic Research: Cookbook

For my project I would like to narrow my research to the topic cookbook. Ever since I traveled to Europe I have  been fascinated with wine. I would like to focus on the myths and folklore of wine. I read three different sources that I learn about from.

The first article I read The Mythology of Wine- A First Sip in Mythology Matters taught me a-lot about the origins of wine. "The domestication of grapevines led to cloning and hence vines that were genetically stable and which produced higher sugar, and therefore higher alcohol in the wine and the greater "magical" effect that led to myths." One of the biggest things that I learned is wine was not a luxury for wealthy people but a necessity for the population, bread and wine were basic elements for food and drink just like water today. For example, "ancient Romans drank about a liter of wine daily" for health reasons because a lot of the water was not safe to drink in certain climates. People would even mix their wine in the water to reduce the health risk.

The second article I read Wine and Mythology: A Journey to the Genesis of Wine taught me about the mythology behind wine. In the Bible wine is seen as a present from God, there are many stories in the Bible about wine. The culture of wine is as long as the culture of mankind. In Roman mythology Bacchus is known as the God of wine. Bacchus is known for transmitting his knowledge to humans on how to plant vines and make wine. The story states that "Bacchus was on a journey and he noticed a small plant growing which he pulled from the ground and took with him. He found a hollow bird bone where he placed the plant however it grew quickly and the roots became exposed." He found many more hollow bones where the same thing happened and eventually the plant became a vine.

The third article I read Wine Lore: Folklore That's Had a Few by Jennifer Jordan, taught me about some of the most popular wine Folklore. One of them specially stood out to me, "When in Rome, Don't Spill Wine" because it talks about a saying I have never heard before. Apparently a lot of people lived by the notion that there's no use in crying over spilled milk but spilled wine one the other hand is not as simple. The Romans believed that spilling wine inadvertently was an omen of disaster, as ominous as crossing paths with a black cat or having a snake fall from the roof into a yard.
