It all began with a street peddler roaming the loud streets of the Arabian City of Agrabah. That street urchin was Aladdin, a poor boy with no education and has to steal to survive. Princess Jasmine was the daughter of the Sultan of the land and had very strict plans for his daughter’s future. Aladdin was not included in those plans. Princess Jasmine was the complete opposite of Aladdin, the only thing they had in common is they both had animal friends. Aladdin’s faithful monkey friend Abu and Princess Jasmine’s tiger friend Rajah.
Eventually Princess Jasmine gets tired of the strict rules such has being forced to remain in the palace so she sneaks out to the marketplace, where she meets Aladdin. Aladdin falls deeply in love, you could even say obsessed, with the princess and wants to help her out of trouble.
Sultan’s wicked assistant Jarfar, throws Aladdin into jail and somehow finds his way being sucked into Jarfar’s evil plan to rule the land with the mysterious lamp. The legend states that only a person who is a “diamond in the rough” can retrieve the lamp from the Cave of Wonders. Jarfar makes Aladdin go get the lamp. When Aladdin finds the lamp he discovers that there is a Genie that lives inside and when you rub on it the genie appears and you have three wishes from the owner.
Even though Aladdin got the lamp, he still was not able to marry the love of his life, Princess Jasmine, because of the concern with the Genie. A rule was created that the Genie cannot make someone fall in love with another. Due to this rule Aladdin uses one his three wishes to pretend to be a prince so that Princess Jasmine and her family will think that he is worthy enough to marry the princess.
Author’s Note
After reading the traditional story of Aladdin, I decided that I like the Disney version better. I took the version (Disney) that I grew up with as a child and summarized it.

Olivia,
ReplyDeleteI didn't read the Arabian Nights story so I wish in your author's note you had elaborated a little more on the differences between the original story and the Disney version. Your summary did a good job of describing the Aladdin tale I am familiar with from my childhood. Did you change the ending so that Aladdin doesn't end up with Jasmine? I was unsure from your story.
Hi Olivia,
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Meghan, that it would of been nice to see the differences between the original story and the Disney adaptation. Surprisingly enough, despite its popularity, I have not seen (or remembered) the Disney version, or the original. By reading your story, I think I am confident enough to go watch the new real life adaptation when it comes out, and not be lost.
Best,
Kevin.
Hey Olivia!
ReplyDeleteRight off the back, I really like the feature on your site of the pages sliding down. Whatever that is, very cool. Great story. It is such a classic story for most of us that is is cool to see an original adaptation of it. I was a little lost on the ending, but it didn't take away from the writing. Mostly because we are all pretty familiar with the original.
Olivia,
ReplyDeleteI am also most familiar with the Disney version of Aladdin, so most of your story was what I expected. What did you like more about the Disney version compared to the original folktale? I didn't read the Arabian Nights section, so I would be curious to see how the two versions of the story compare. In your author's note, you mention that your main goal was to summarize the Disney version, but I feel like the story might be missing the ending! Jasmine and Aladdin are able to end up together (in that version at least), thank goodness!
Hey Olivia,
ReplyDeleteI immediately clicked on this story when I saw that it was Aladdin-based because I also read this story for Week 5, and I am also a huge fan of the Disney cartoon adaptation! I loved reading your story because it was so engaging and the source material was so easy for me to connect to! The ending I think was different than the actual Disney movie, but I appreciate the switch up! Keep up the great work!
